PORT PIRIE REGIONAL TOURISM & ARTS CENTRE, SA
The Port Pirie Regional Tourism and Arts Centre was created by converting Port Pirie's concrete block 1960's Railway Station Building with a major extension to create a Regional Gallery and extensively reworking the interior to provide a Visitor Centre, Craft Shop, Stateliner Bus Terminal and Auditorium. The project integrates the aspirations of the community, with the design outcomes of architects, artist and landscape planners working collaboratively together. Reference is made to Port Pirie's industrial heritage with the integration of local prodicts in the building fabric, including lead, copper and zinc as functional and decorative elements together with interpretive artworks. Environmental strategies utilised in the project included reuse of much of the original building fabric, development of effective sunshading, and promotion of cross ventilation.
