Tika Tirka Indigenous Student Accommodation

Design: Phillips/Pilkington Architects
Furniture Selection: Greenway Architects
Gilbert Street, Adelaide, SA

Tika Tirka is a facility for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students from outer regional and remote areas who are engaged in post-secondary education and accommodates up to 20 students.  Tika Tirka is a Kaurna name for “Sit / Stay and Learn”.

The project provides a variety of social and study spaces to suit different group sizes and activities.  These range from common living, meeting, dining, rooftop terrace and courtyard areas to more intimate shared spaces within ‘Pods’ of 3-4 bedrooms.  The central courtyard ensures light and aspect to all spaces.  Integrated car and bicycle parking, accessed from Owen Street, help to maximise the useable floor space.  Additional features include an efficient concrete and steel structure, sun shading, PV solar array and rooftop kitchen garden.

The project had direct Federal funding to create indigenous accommodation to support the education and training of students from regional and remote South Australia.

Project Value: $4.5m
