Halifax Eco-Housing Co-Operative

ADELAIDE, SA

The Halifax Eco-City Housing Co-operative Inc. consists of six low cost housing units which provide an alternative model to traditional Australian suburban housing. Each house occupies approximately one-eighth of a suburban block while providing the occupants with private outdoor space and enabling car-free inner city living. The housing incorporates environmental strategies, making best use of orientation, ventilation, thermal mass and materials to minimise energy use and impact. The project had to meet the strict criteria and budgets of SACHA. The cost of two storey, two bedroom houses including all external works was approximately $70,000, with each house being individually designed to meet the needs of a wide range of users.
